Yesterday in Kitchen Science we did the Super Simple Carbon Dioxide experiment.
Wait, what? Carbon what?

Carbon Dioxide. it is a complicated name for the gas that you find in soda water or coke. it forms when you mix an aide, like vinegar, with something alkalic, like baking soda. And we did just that!

First Ciocia Chini showed us a jar with a lid which had a hole in it.Then she put a straw in the hole so that the gas that forms inside could escape. She put the other end of the straw into a glass so that the gas gathers in the glass.
Then we put some baking soda in the jar, and poured vinegar over it. Instantly it started foaming and the gas began to move through the straw into the glass.

But... we couldn't see it because carbon dioxide is colourless and odourless. so, tp show us it is there, Ciocia Chini put a lit match inside the glass and instantly it went off... poof! This happens when there is no oxygen. Remember - no fire can burn without oxygen.
The same thing happens when you blow out a candle by blowing on it.
