Since this week our preschoolers are talking about cold weather, the Ants did a cool science experiment about melting ice.
They put some ice in two containers and put salt onto one of them, then they made predictions about which ice will melt quicker – with or without ice. After some time they checked, and it turned out that the ice with salt melts quicker.
Why is that? Because the salt lowers the freezing point of the water, which means the ice on the ground can’t freeze that layer of water at 0 degrees Celsius anymore. This is why we put salt on icy ground in winter! Unfortunately, this is bad for the environment as the salt contains chloride which pollutes it!
